What is Digital Citizenship?According to Common Sense Education, the leading resource of digital citizenship information for schools and educators, being a good digital citizen is more than knowing your way around the web. It’s about empowering your students with skills to think critically, behave safely, and participate responsibly online, allowing them to connect and collaborate in meaningful ways.
Digital Citizenship encourages students to be safe, smart, and ethical in their digital lives. Engaging in digital citizenship lessons provides students with skills for 21st century learning and living by taking real-life challenges and digital dilemmas that students face and having them take ownership of how they will react when faced with these challenges. Lessons can be found across the world wide web for students K-12. Lessons range from Internet Safety and Digital Footprints to Digital Drama and Cyberbullying. The responsibility of educating students and empowering them to be confident, respectful digital citizens can be overwhelming, yet it is imperative that we give our students the tools to be successful if we are going to give them the tools to be 21st century learners in a digital world. Digital Citizenship Week, October 15-19, is a great opportunity for schools to begin generating lifelong best practices for digital citizenship. |
