What is Netiquette?
According to the BBC, netiquette is a code of good behavior on the internet. In other words, netiquette is the standard all users must adhere to in order to use said platform. Netiquette and its origins have spawned from the increased activity of cyberbullying and cyber-aggression taking place on the world wide web.
The idea of netiquette does only have to apply to individual users and their interaction. Using netiquette also applies to businesses that use websites and social media platforms. Examples of business engaging in unethical behavior would entail abuse of advertisements via pop-up, malware, and repeat branding. A strong netiquette policy will assist in curbing this type and all types of cyberbullying that could arise on a given social media platform. |
Cyberbullying
According to stopbullying.gov, a website sponsored by the United States government describes Cyberbullying and or cyber-aggression the sending or posting of “mean” content on user interfaces. The “mean” content that can be derived from any material sent via text, SMS, email, pop-up, etc. As the internet continues to expand in terms of increased business traffic and user-interface, cyberbullying has and will continue to grow.

To implement a strong safeguard to prevent cyberbullying or cyber-aggressiveness, a solid netiquette policy will go a long way. The following are some netiquette policies I would recommend for parents to sign:
1. Refrain from any type of personal abuse.
2. While disagreements are sometimes appropriate, refrain from personal attacks or name calling.
3. Spamming of any kind is prohibited. This would include any posting of material repeated continuously.
4. Do not post any protected or copywritten material or “pirating”. This is illegal and subject of civil or criminal prosecution.
5. The owner of the site has autonomy to limited or suspend someone’s use of site if said owner deems user to be in violation of netiquette policy.
