According to the International Society for Technology in Education, ensuring equitable access means that all students have the ability and access to the most current technology and digital resources within their educational setting (ISTE, n.d.). Today’s society is constantly evolving and changing along with current technology. By ensuring that students are being exposed to technology both inside and outside of the classroom allows students to become better 21st century learners and more prepared for college or the workforce.
There are multiple ways to make sure all students have an opportunity to take advantage of technology with the classroom setting. Teachers can set up a rotating computer schedule. Schools or classrooms can have a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) day in which students can bring their own personal electronic devices to use in class. Allow opportunities for students to partner up and share devices. Provide time in class to complete any assignments that may require the use of a computer, especially if you are aware that one may not have access at home.
Some schools have multiple means of access to technology such as a computer lab or mobile computer cart. If this is the case, then consider setting up a sign-up genius account where classrooms can reserve the computer lab or mobile computer cart during specified times during the week.
